2005
The evening's festivities, telecast live from downtown Nashville, awarded country music's elite for the year's most outstanding videos. The 2005 CMT MUSIC AWARDS is country music's only fan-voted awards show and only video music awards. Fans cast a record number of votes at CMT's Web site,
Keith Urban, who received the night's big honor for Video of the Year, voted on by viewers during the live telecast said, "The fans are a passionate lot, and I love that. It's pretty overwhelming when you get that kind of love back from people like I've been getting."

2005 CMT Music Award Winners
They say the show must go on and boy did it! CMT was the place to be to see the big stars of today, yesterday and tomorrow perform and win awards.
In this viewers opinion this is one of the most important award shows, it isn't voted on by artists, producers or record industry people. It is the chance for fans to let the artists know exactly what we like and who we like. No critics can tell a fan who to vote for, that has to come from their own personal opinion.
With almost all the nominees performing, there were still a few surprises, perhaps the biggest being Trisha Yearwood making an appearance to perform her new single Georgia Rain.
The nine winners were:

CMT Music Awards Video of the Year
Keith Urban - "Days Go By"

CMT Music Awards Male Video of the Year
Kenny Chesney - "I Go Back"

CMT Music Awards Female Video of the Year
Gretchen Wilson - "When I Think About Cheatin'"

CMT Music Awards Collaborative Video of the Year
Brad Paisley featuring Alison Krauss - "Whiskey Lullaby"

CMT Music Awards Group/Duo Video of the Year
Rascal Flatts - "Feels Like Today"

CMT Music Awards Breakthrough Video of the Year

CMT Music Awards Hottest Video of the Year
Toby Keith - "Whiskey Girl"

CMT Music Awards Most Inspiring Music Video of the Year

DAYS GO BY
"Thank you, first of all, to everybody who voted. I really, really appreciate this award more than you know. ... I just really enjoyed making this video." -- Keith Urban

Nashville, TN – Moments after winning the prestigious Video of the Year Award at the 2005 CMT Music Awards, country artist Keith Urban did what any good son would do. He whipped out his cell phone and called his mother to share the good news.

It was a thwarted attempt at instant communication, however, because Urban's mom apparently wasn't up on her son's plans, and the singer was being pulled into a tightly scheduled series of backstage interviews. "She didn't know what I had won," Urban said moments later. "I was right in the middle of explaining it when I had to hang up. She probably thinks I won the lottery!"

The technology of instant communication had worked more effectively for Urban during the previous two hours, when viewers of CMT's live awards telecast were able to log online and select one of four videos as the year's best. Urban's "Days Go By" was their top choice

Backstage after the show, the night's winners had much to say about the impact of music videos and exposure on CMT — none more surprising that Keith Urban. Though quick to note that he was "not putting down [music] videos," Urban expressed thoughtful concern at the possibility that videos can actually compromise music. "To some degree they're an unfortunate reality of the music business," he asserted. "Being photogenic wasn't part of what got me into music."

"There's some music that just doesn't film well," he continued. "People don't go out and buy videos." Proudly raising his award — a giant belt buckle — Urban cheered, "Here's to actual audible music — as well as videos!"
