Né le 26 octobre 1967 en Nouvelle-Zélande, Keith Urban a grandi dans une ferme à Caboolture en Australie avec des parents qui adoraient la culture américaine, et spécialement la Country music. Les premiers albums qu'il écoute sont ceux de Charley Pride, Dolly Parton, Don Williams et Jim Reeves. Il apprend à jouer de la guitare à six ans, grâce à une petite annonce qu'une jeune femme affiche dans le magasin de son père, proposant des leçons de guitare , et à sept ans, il sait déjà qu'il veut aller à Nashville jouer de la Country music.
Il s'inscrit alors dans une agence intérim pour jeunes qui le sollicite en tant que chanteur, danseur, souffleur, enfin tout ce qui se rapporte à la scène et qui pourra lui servir plus tard pour sa carrière musicale.
Avec la culture musicale transmise par son père qui est un fan de Country music, Keith Urban ajoute à son propre héritage le groupe Dire Straits, Mark Knopfler et son jeu de guitare, et Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham. Dans les années 80, il engage progressivement son groupe de musique dans des clubs locaux et reproduit alors pendant ses concerts chaque note de musique de Dire Straits.

Cette même année, il est nominé au Grammy award pour la meilleure performance instrumentale country avec le morceau " Rollercoaster " et gagne le CMA Horizon award dans la catégorie meilleur nouvel artiste.
En 2002 sort le second album solo de Keith Urban " Golden Road ". Cet album symbolise la vie et les voyages musicaux de Keith qui l'ont déracinés de l'Australie pour le conduire au sommet des charts de country music.

S'il y a une note positive dans cet album, c'est parce que je me sens vraiment reconnaissant de faire ce que j'aime. Je n'ai pas encore trouvé ce que je cherche, mais je me sens béni de continuer sur le chemin de la connaissance. "
Les influences de Keith Urban viennent de différents genres, décennies et continents, mais donnent leur propre effet à chaque morceau, combinant des rythmes contagieux avec des mélodies irrésistibles, tout cela créant un son tout à fait nouveau.
" Je pense que mes racines australiennes se retrouvent dans mon jeu. Il y a comme un son primal et je pense que je laisse petit-à-petit remonter mes influences. Quand je suis arrivé aux Etats-Unis, je jouais de cette manière, mais ça faisait flipper les gens, alors j'ai adouci mon jeu pour laisser les gens me connaître lentement. L'avant-dernier album était dans cette veine, je laissais les gens me connaître un peu mieux. Dans " Golden Road " , c'est carrément une porte grande ouverte sur mon existence. C'est un peu comme si vous rencontrez pour la sixième fois les parents de votre amie ! "
Keith Urban finit l'année 2002 sur une note positive. Le premier morceau de l'album " Golden Road ", " Somebody Like You ", est numéro un pendant deux mois. Il a été aussi nommé par le Billboard Magazine l'artiste le plus diffusé sur les ondes en 2003. Il a multiplié ses apparitions à la télé (The Today Show, Good Morning America, ...), étant, de par son charisme, très apprécié sur les plateaux.
